Process and Materials
I am attracted to abstract and non-objective art; particularly in the ambiguity of non-objective painting and the variety of possible meanings interpreted by each viewer. Within my painting and printmaking, I strive for this ambiguity; asking viewers to take away something that is specific to them personally.
With my paintings I embrace results that are both purposeful and uncontrolled. Some of my paintings are on a relatively large format to engulf the viewer’s vision. I began with gestural painting, which is applied spontaneously and expressively, with vibrant color. Without anticipating the final image, I then apply a uniform and repeated print, with the goal of imposing structure and order onto the existing painting. I look to juxtapose organic paintings with geometric prints, thereby creating spatially confusing optical illusions. Materials used are oil paint, acrylic paint, and oil printing ink on canvas or paper.
With my prints I take photographs that I find particularly interesting and design abstractions based off the photographs. I transfer these designs either to linoleum or a zinc printing plate. With the linoleum I carve out the design and with the zinc plate I have to use nitric acid to etch the design into the plate, transforming the plate into a 2D relief. I then ink up the plates and either hand press the blocks or use a printing press.
